MEMA representatives are canvassing the coast on this first official day of the 2021 Hurricane Season. MEMA Director Stephen McCraney told SuperTalk Mississippi their goal is to make sure residents know what to do in the event of a storm. “We have produced an all hazard guide along with our hurricane guides in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. There are also some braille copies available. We just really want to get the word out today.”
Hurricane Season begins today and runs through November 30th. Forecasters are predicting an above-average season. Colorado State University is predicting 16 named storms and 7 hurricanes, 3 of which could be major.
It’s been months since Hurricane Zeta, but blue tarps can still be seen on rooftops along the coast. “”We did end up with about $19-million in individual assistance out to homeowners. We got almost $9-million in property damage that we’re still working on,” McCraney stated.
