JACKSON, Miss. – More than 40 Mississippi Department of Transportation workers will lose their jobs next year.
The agency said new construction projects have dropped for years, and they don’t expect it to pick up. That forecast is forcing the agency to shrink its budget by cutting its workforce.
“With this reduction in force, MDOT is proactively addressing the economic future of Mississippi by adopting best business practices, right-sizing our workforce and improving business processes with a focus on ways to reduce operational costs,” MDOT said in a written statement. “This focus allows us to be more fiscally responsible and transparent with taxpayer dollars.”
The 44 workers who will be laid off are with MDOT’s Right of Way Division and have been told they will be on the payroll until January 2015. It’s not anticipated that there will be any more layoffs.
