The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has been granted $35 million from the federal government for road construction in the central portion of the state.
Congressman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., reports that the funds will go toward improvements on US 49 from Bentonia to Yazoo City.
Included in the construction is an approximately 10-mile roadway repair, including asphalt overlay, removal, and replacement of failed areas in concrete pavement, reconstructed concrete island, curb, and gutter.
“We are grateful to the congressional delegate for supporting our application. US 49 is the main corridor from Jackson, MS, to the MS Delta and lies at the heart of commercial, public, and school transportation,” Central District Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons said.
“The $35 million awarded to the Mississippi Department of Transportation will enhance the ability to move safe traffic daily.”
The highway will also be given wider paved shoulders, slope repairs, repairs of damaged drainage systems, and a replacement of striping, raised pavement markers, and rumble strips.
