Delays in traffic flow continue on one of the busiest portions of interstate in Mississippi as repairs are being made.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation announced that crews will shift traffic traveling in both directions on Interstate 55 over the Pearl River in Jackson to the inside lanes as crews begin to work on the outside lanes, starting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to officials, the I-55 northbound Pearl Street off-ramp will also close for this phase of work, in addition to the I-55 southbound on-ramp from Pearl Street, which is currently closed.
MDOT crews have completed the hydro-demolition and concrete pours on the inside lanes and will shift efforts to the outside lanes after the traffic switch.
Traffic will first shift to the left lanes on I-55 northbound. Once the northbound shift is complete, the same shift will take place on the southbound side of the major interstate.
Then, on Friday at 8 p.m., the I-20 east to I-55 north flyover ramp in Jackson will be reduced to one lane for up to approximately nine months due to a bridge preservation project.
MDOT reports that the repair work is part of a larger preservation project that includes jacking and structural repairs, epoxy injection, and installation of joint seals on the flyover bridge, in addition to the hydro-demolition and overlay of the bridge decks on I-55 over the Pearl River.
