The Mississippi Department of Education has designated six elementary schools as Mississippi Emerging Science of Reading Schools (SOR) for the new school year, and for the first time, named a Mississippi Science of Reading school.
The “Emerging SOR” designation is for schools that have trained teachers in the science of reading, have exhibited a change of instructional practices, and have “embodied a school culture that focuses on building skillful, strong readers in kindergarten through third grade.” The SOR designation can be awarded when a school is named an Emerging SOR in consecutive years.
The newly named SOR school is Senatobia Elementary, while the six Emerging SOR schools are:
- Chickasaw Elementary (Olive Branch)
- Ripley Elementary (Ripley)
- McLaurin Elementary (Florence)
- Dana Road Elementary (Vicksburg)
- Jefferson County Elementary (Fayette)
- Beach Elementary (Pascagoula)
“Congratulations to the teachers and leaders in each of these schools for their commitment to providing evidence-based reading instruction for their students,” State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lance Evans said. “Their dedication to implementing the science of reading is crucial for helping students become strong, confident readers who are prepared for success throughout their academic careers and beyond.”
Each spring, K-5 schools in the Magnolia State are invited to apply for the recognition. MDE’s Literacy Leadership Team will visit the campuses of each honoree school to celebrate the designations beginning next month.
