JONES COUNTY, Miss. – Mississippi State Senator Chris McDaniel has filed a formal legal challenge to the June 24 Republican primary runoff in which he narrowly lost to incumbent U.S. Senator Thad Cochran.
McDaniel filed the challenge Thursday afternoon in circuit court in Jones County and is asking for a new election or to be declared the winner.
He has argued that thousands of people who voted in the Republican runoff also cast ballots in the Democratic primary earlier in the year. Such cross over voting is against the law in Mississippi.
Cochran’s campaign maintains the election was fair, with no more voting irregularities than any other election.
The Mississippi Supreme Court will now appoint a special judge to handle the case.
