Just over an hour into Tuesday night’s meeting of the Board of Mayor and Selectmen of the city of McComb, Ward 3 Selectman Albert Eubanks called for the termination of Pike County Civil Defense Director Richard Coghlan for making inappropriate comments.
Selectman Eubanks had a recording that he alleged contained remarks from Coghlan. The recording, played by Eubanks over his phone at the board table, was difficult for people in attendance to hear, but Selectman Eubanks repeated aloud some of the remarks he claimed Director Coghlan made.
He alleged Coghlan made comments regarding black people, “dope” and other topics. It was apparent that Coghlan had no idea he was being recorded; in Mississippi, it is legal to record a conversation as long as at least one person involved in the conversation is aware it’s being recorded.
The board voted to table the matter, due in large part to the fact that the Civil Defense Director is not an employee of the city, but on a later recommendation by Ward 4 Selectman Donovan Hill, the board voted 4-2 to instruct the board attorney to start an investigation into the veracity and source of the recording, along with any recourse the city might have.
