COLUMBUS, Miss. — Columbus Mayor Robert Smith felt like he deserved a $10,000 raise, so he gave himself one. At least that is what he told the Commercial Dispatch. Smith was the one who made the final decision on a suggested budget because of a split vote between city council members. The proposed budget would bump Smith’s salary up to $88,797. Afterwards, there was discussion about how the city needs over half a million dollars from reserve funds just to balance next year’s budget.
The raise will go into effect during the next fiscal year if city council members approve a final version of the budget in September.
