Massive Flooding in the Magnolia State: MEMA Damage Reports, Response to Rising Waters

PEARL – 41 Mississippi counties are reporting damage of some sort after heavy rains and flooding have blanketed the state. There are no injuries or deaths being reported but two fishermen are still missing in Claiborne County. Initial damage reports show 95 homes with major damage, 277 with minor damage with assessments still ongoing.

The National Weather Service says flooding can still be a problem through Sunday, and even then, rivers and streams will continue to crest, so stay aware of the water levels and rain expected.

If you see water across the road, do not drive through it. Turn around, don’t drown.

Currently 9 shelters are open that are supported by the Mississippi Department of Human Services and the American Red Cross:

  • Bolivar County: Mound Bayou Community Center.
  • Madison County: Priestly Chapel MB Church in Canton.
  • Washington County: County Convention Center in Greenville.
  • Coahoma County: Clarksdale Civic Center.
  • Forrest County: 361 Shelter in Hattiesburg.
  • Jones County: 361 Shelter in Laurel.
  • Pearl River County: 361 Shelter in Picayune.
  • Clarke County: Shubuta Volunteer Fire Dept.
  • Marion County: Springhill Baptist Church in Sandy Hook (Independent Shelter).

Securing Mississippi during this flooding event is a multi-agency effort. So far, MEMA has distributed 255,00 sandbags, over 7,000 bottles of water, nearly 1,200 MREs, and 150 tarps.

In response to Governor Bryant’s call, the Mississippi Army National Guard has been established in Forrest, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, and Pearl River counties. 120 troops are working in assistance there.

The Mid-Mississippi Strike Team is responsible for 3 rescue boat teams deployed to Pearl River Co., and 5 rescue boat teams deployed to Forrest Co.

MDEQ is assessing a dam issue at Lake Tiak-O’Khata in Winston County.
