Jackson, Miss– The Attorney General’s Office Consumer Protection Division has recently gotten numerous calls about the data breach with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management hack.
Attorney General Jim Hood says this breach could impact millions of current and former government employees and former government and military contractors. Social security numbers, birthdates, legal and financial records and even fingerprints were leaked in this breach.
“Data breaches and identity theft continue to cause significant harm to consumers, and full-scale identity theft involving the use of just a Social Security number can cost a consumer $5,100 on average,” says Attorney General Jim Hood, “I am a victim of this hack, too, and I intend to check my credit regularly for at least a decade.”
Anyone who thinks they have been a victim of identity theft should contact the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-281-4418.
