The Jackson Police Department is investigating a homicide at a luxury apartment complex and one of its former officers is a suspect in the case.

Authorities were called to the Tapestry Apartments at Northridge near Old Canton Road early Tuesday morning in response to a man being killed. Family members of the deceased individual have identified him as Carlos Collins, a registered nurse from Yazoo City. His killer is alleged to be Marcus Johnson, a former JPD officer who has abused his former occupation to take advantage of others.

Family members of the suspected victim told WAPT that Collins had suffered gunshot wounds and had been struck by an ax. They said authorities notified them that the scene was very gruesome.

Police have confirmed that they are searching for Johnson, who has not been an active member of the force since 2013. He resigned after he was arrested in neighboring Ridgeland for careless driving and having no proof of insurance. He is also accused of stealing a watch from retail giant JCPenney in 2009 and failing to pay the fine for his shoplifting charge.

Less than a year after his resignation, Johnson found himself in hot water once again with his former bosses. In April 2014, he is said to have donned a police badge and impersonated an officer to write a female Jackson State University student a ticket. He then allegedly told the unidentified female that he would discard the ticket if she agreed to sleep with him. Johnson was later taken into custody and was found to have been in possession of a stolen police radio.

Anyone with information about Johnson’s whereabouts or the homicide in general can contact JPD at (601)960-1234 or Crime Stoppers at (601)355-8477.
