Man Sentenced to Life for Murder Charges

TUPELO, Miss.- A 20-year-old Tupelo man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty to murder charges.

Nathaniel Whitfield decided to plead guilty plea instead of possibly facing the death penalty if his case went to trial.

Whitfield admitted he is the man who shot and killed Verona Apartment complex owner Jay Suppiah back in November 2012.

Verona Police Chief Anthony Anderson told the Daily Journal, a man walked into the office of the Bailey Apartments between 5:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. Nov. 30, 2012, and fired multiple shots.

Suppiah, 46, owner of the Bailey Apartments on Raymond Avenue and many other apartments in Verona, died in the office from a gunshot wound to the head.

A second person in the apartment office was shot and recovered from the wounds.

Many apartment complex residents said they heard three gunshots that night and then saw someone fleeing.

The case went unsolved for over a year until Whitfield was arrested in February.
