A high-speed chase ensued early Monday morning after a man in Rankin County allegedly tried to attack a woman with a chainsaw before fleeing the scene.
Around 3:20 a.m., the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department received a phone call from a female complainant requesting a civil standby to obtain some personal items from an address on Loflin Road in Florence after a domestic dispute. When deputies were en route to the residence, the female caller stated that Jason Antonio Salter had attempted to assault her with a chainsaw before carjacking her vehicle.
Salter was eventually handcuffed after leading multiple law enforcement agencies through Rankin County and into Hinds County. Police put down road spikes and were able to surround the stolen Toyota Camry after it overturned on Highway 80 near Gallatin Street in Jackson. Even though Salter attempted to flee on foot, he was tased and taken into custody.
Salter was treated by medical personnel on the scene and cleared to be transported to the Rankin County Detention Center. He is charged with aggravated domestic violence, carjacking, and fleeing and eluding. Until his initial court appearance, Salter will be held without bond.
The Florence Police Department, Richland Police Department, Pearl Police Department, and Capitol Police worked jointly with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department to make the arrest.
