An investigation is underway following an officer-involved shooting in the metro Jackson area over the weekend.
Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers confirms that gunfire rang out after officers responded to a call regarding a domestic dispute between a couple at Ridgeland Place Apartments off William Boulevard near Old Canton Road on Saturday.
Authorities report that officers were met with shots fired when attempting to make contact with the individuals involved in the alleged altercation. Officers returned fire. Then a brief stand-off took place with the two subjects hiding in an apartment unit.
The stand-off ended after one of the subjects, identified as 28-year-old Keithannia Starks, surrendered to police after having been shot. An unidentified female believed to be involved in the domestic situation was taken to safety, per Myers.
Starks was said to have been bleeding from his chest and was rushed to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment. He is charged with domestic violence aggravated assault and aggravated assault on an officer.
No police officers were injured during the shooting.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently assessing the incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
