A toddler is hospitalized after shooting himself inside a Starkville apartment.
Investigators confirmed that, on Sunday, the unidentified 2-year-old accessed the firearm in a drawer at a residence on Louisville Street and accidentally opened fire, striking himself. The child is reported to be in serious condition and is being treated for his injuries.
On Monday, police took Nigel Cheatham, 24, into custody in connection with the incident. Cheatham is charged with child deprivation of necessaries with substantial harm. He was transported to the Oktibbeha County Jail.
Authorities have not released Cheatham’s relation to the child. His bond has not been announced at this time.
