COLUMBUS, Miss.- The National Life Group announced Columbus as the 2016 Main Streets Across America representative for Mississippi.
Locals still call it “Possum Town,” the name came from Native Americans. The small town is known for its historical charm, community pride, and like all of Mississippi, it’s southern hospitality.
Main Street in Columbus is located in the historic district. It has been voted as one of the top 10 “Wonderful Small Town Central Business Districts in the South,” by Southern Business and Development magazine. They also won the “Great American Main Street Award” in 2010.
The City is known for its strong downtown ethics and long lasting passion to preserve historic buildings. Main Street Columbus is an organization aimed to bring positive movement to downtown areas with the help of local property owners.
“Main Street is more than just an address, it’s a mindset that embraces a strong sense of community based on shared neighborly values,” said Mehran Assadi, CEO, National Life Group. “It’s a place where handshakes, smile and personal greetings still mean something and where promises are made and kept. To some, that may sound nostalgic, but at National Life, we believe main street values still exist and we use them to guide everything we do and every decision we make.”
