JACKSON, Miss.–The new mayor of Jackson was sworn in Monday in front of hundreds of people at the Jackson Convention Center.
Chokwe Lumumba has now taken over the reins as the 50th mayor of the capital city.
“All the people that are here today,” he said. “It’s time to understand that we are bound together.”
His slogan has been “One city. One aim. One destiny.”
“We’re all here together for the purpose of building a new society,” said Lumumba.
He did touch on the crime rate, and on the same day Jackson was put in the top-10 most dangerous cities in America on one list.
The Mississippi Mass Choir was in attendance to sing at the event and U.S. Congressman Bennie Thompson spoke along with outgoing mayor Harvey Johnson.
