JACKSON, Miss.- After the state primaries have come to a close, things are a little more clear in the race for state offices. Including the Lieutenant Governor’s race, in which the Republican Primary was dominated by incumbent Tate Reeves 82%.
His opponent, Tim Johnson, a former state senator and known Elvis-impersonator, also took the Democratic Primary with ease. Johnson has based his entire platform on expanding Medicaid in Mississippi.
Lieutenant Governor Reeves has a little bit of a different opinion on how the state’s money has been spent.
“Democrats running for office for legislative seats, and I presume for others as well, talk about what they want to spend money on,” Reeves said. “They want to spend money on expanding Medicaid, but they never talk about where that money’s going to come from. They just talk about what they want to spend.”
Reeves said that he’s proud of the way the Republican-controlled legislature has focused their spending on their priorities over the past four years.
“You can see what our priorities are. We’ll spend 400-million dollars more this year on public education than was spent the year that I came into office,” Reeves added. “Of that, 285-million will go to K through twelve, and 120-million dollars more will be spent this year than four years ago on higher education. So we don’t believe you can look at education in silos, you have to look at it in the aggregate. And I’m pleased with our record of significantly improving and enhancing our commitment to public education.”
