Lauderdale County Teacher Accused of Abusing Special Needs Student

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. – A former Lauderdale County School District teacher has been charged with abusing a student with special needs.

Annie Orum, 57, a special education teacher at Northeast Middle School, was fired February 18.  “We had the incident investigated and determined it was necessary to terminate her,” explained Lauderdale County Superintendent Randy Hodges.  The district then reported the incident to the State Department of Education and turned over its evidence to the sheriff’s department.

Ordum was in circuit court Tuesday for a hearing.  Afterwards she was booked into the county jail on a charge of abuse of a vulnerable adult, a statute that also covers children with special needs.  Orum is currently free on a $5,000 bond.
