The brand new, $50 million Lauderdale County Government Complex is now open to the public.
Local and state leaders gathered Monday to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the government center. Standing at the site of the former Village Fair Mall on 22nd Avenue, the complex was built, in part, by remains of the mall.
“This modern and efficient facility will house a variety of county offices and services, making it easier for residents to access the resources they need,” the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation posted on Facebook. “We are excited to see how this new center will improve the delivery of government services in Lauderdale County.”
The new center replaces the former, more than 200-year-old courthouse located on 21st Street. It will be the new home of courtrooms and judges. The county’s administrative offices, such as the board of supervisors, will be in the complex.
Offices for the tax collector and assessor will also be placed in the facility.
