JACKSON, Miss.- The Mississippi Highway Patrol has wrapped up their Labor Day enforcement period and released the numbers from the weekend.
The MHP reported the following from the 2016 Labor Day enforcement period:
- 8,442 citations
- 175 DUI arrests
- 170 motor vehicle crashes were investigated
- 57 injuries reported from those accidents
- 1 fatality reported
Although citations, DUI arrests, and accident numbers were higher this year than last year, fatalities were down since 2015. Last year four deaths were reported.
One fatality was reported. MHP released the details of the accident.
“On Monday, September 5, 2016 at approximately 6:42 a.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a traffic crash involving one vehicle in Noxubee County,” said the report. “A 2005 Nissan pickup driven by Jimmie L. Foot, 53, from Columbus was traveling Eastbound on MS14 when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree. Passenger Tommie L. Harris, 50, from Columbus was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene. The crash remains under investigation.”
MHP Captain Johnny Poulos said they credit more responsible driving, statewide law enforcement efforts, and safe driving messages to the decline of fatalities.
