Kermit Davis named SEC Coach of the Year, Terence Davis and Tyree pick up All-SEC honors

Kermit Davis has been named SEC Coach of the Year by both the Associated Press and as voted on by the SEC Coaches.

Davis becomes the sixth Ole Miss Basketball head coach to win SEC Coach of the Year and the second in program history to do so in his first season. Andy Kennedy also won the honor in his first season.

Davis helped guide the Rebels to a 20-11 season, a 10-8 mark in the SEC and on the verge of earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament just one season after the program won 12 games total.

“First of all, I would like to thank Ross Bjork for giving me this wonderful opportunity at Ole Miss,”Davis said in a press release. “It’s an honor to be recognized among such an elite group of coaches that we have in the SEC. A huge thanks to the hard work of our coaching staff, support staff and players that make these awards possible.”

Ole Miss was predicted to finish last in the conference in the preseason, as voted on by the media and the eight-win improvement from a season ago is the 11th largest in college basketball.

Junior guard Breein Tyree was named First-Team All-SEC by the coaches and Second-Team All-SEC by the AP. Terence Davis picked up Second-Team All-SEC honors, as voted on by the coaches. Tyree led the Rebels in scoring a 18.3 points, good for second in the conference. Terence Davis averaged 15.5 points per game in his senior season.

Ole Miss returns to action on Thursday when it takes on Alabama in the SEC Tournament in Nashville. The Rebels are the seven seed and drew the 10th-seeded Crimson Tide in the opening round.
