KEMPER COUNTY, Miss.–If you remember hearing the amber alert signal in May for six-year-old Jashayla Hopson when she was taken from her school, Kemper Elementary, then you’ll want to know that the trial of the woman accused of being behind it was set to start Monday.
Jessie Pollard, 54, and her son, Devonta were both set to be in the hot seat in what authorities call a conspiracy. Pollard was expected to plead insanity, while the son says he’s not guilty.
Devonta is a former University of Alabama basketball player.
The whole thing was over some land, is what prosecutors planned to say. Pollard is accused of kidnapping the girl, whose mom is her cousin, to force her way in the fight.
Jashayla was not hurt, but was found on a rural road in Lauderdale County the next day.
