Jackson, MISS—Facebook. Really it is about being social, having fun, and feeling connected. But a sexual predator sees it as a perverted opportunity. Now there’s an app to help you keep your child safe on Facebook.Think about your teenager’s Facebook page. Maybe she has 1,000 friends. Maybe he has 600 friends. But does your teen know all of those people? If he doesn’t, surely you don’t. Without knowing who the Facebook friends are, one can’t know the stranger’s intentions. WLBT says now there’s a new app to help keep your kid safe on Facebook.
It’s called the Friend Verifier. The app scans the Facebook friend list. A user is ranked yellow if they have the same name as a sex offender on the registry. It’s orange if they have the same name and location, and it’s a red level warning if the name, date of birth, and location all match that of someone on the sex offender list.
The Friend Verifier is only good for Facebook now but the developers hope to have it on Twitter, Instagram and other social media before too much longer.
So far, The Friend Verifier has scanned friends’ lists over seven million times since May.
