MADISON COUNTY, Miss. — A newborn baby stuffed in a garbage bag, put in a suitcase and left behind a Madison County church.
Now its left up to a jury to decide if the baby’s mom is guilty of capital murder. Closing arguments in the case wrapped up this afternoon and jury deliberations started shortly afterwards.
The doctor that gave Shelia Ealey a mental exam after the baby died testified that she had signs of depression, but he was not completely sure that she was insane at the time.
Defense attorneys say Ealey was a single mom with a boyfriend that was not supportive. They also say she was kidnapped and raped at gunpoint and was not sure if the baby was conceived as a result of the attack.
If found guilty, Ealey could be sent to jail for the rest of her life.
