If you have a high school junior who is considering a career in medicine, there’s an opportunity for them to get an early taste of what it’s like in the field this summer.
Mississippi State Extension Services has announced the Rural Medical Scholars summer program, which allows for high school juniors to get a glimpse into the medical field and earn college credit.
Students can apply online.
They’ll need a letter of recommendation from a teacher, ACT scores and transcript from the school counselor, and they must have a 24 or higher on the ACT.
Other qualifications include:
• be currently completing your junior year in high school.
• have achieved a minimum composite ACT score of 24.
• have high school grades in line with your ACT score.
• have a desire to learn about a career in family medicine.
• be a resident of Mississippi.
The program includes 5 weeks of study with pre-med courses, a visit to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, shadow doctors, earn certification, and the campus experience provided by living on campus at Mississippi State University.
The program will last from May 28- June 29. The deadline to apply is March 20.
