The Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks announced Joey Buchanan as one of this year’s recipients of the Mississippi Outstanding Sportsman Award on Thursday.
Buchanan, who was honored through a unanimous vote, was first introduced to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks through his time as a coach within the agency’s scholastic shooting sports program. Since then, he has served as manager of the MDWFP’s McIvor Shooting Facility in Sardis, where he ensures the facility stays in top-notch condition and educates visitors on safe firearm handling along with providing shooting tips.
A lifelong bow hunter, Buchanan crafts his own bows and uses his free time to mentor the next generation of Mississippi hunters.
“On behalf of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, we extend our sincerest gratitude to Joey Buchanan for his enduring commitment to the people and bountiful natural resources of the state of Mississippi,” MDWFP Executive Director Lynn Posey said.
The Mississippi Outstanding Sportsman Award is awarded annually to those who have contributed to the state’s outdoor scene through conservation, mentorship, and stewardship. Professional bass fisherman Alfred Williams was also honored with the award in November.
