As blood shortages continue across not only Mississippi but the entire nation, football legend Jerry Rice is stepping in to try and help.
Rice, who played at Mississippi Valley State before enjoying a Hall of Fame career with the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders, has joined together with American Red Cross and Suburban Propane to encourage the community to commit to giving blood for patients in need.
Rice used to be afraid of needles and is still not the biggest fan. However, he says that once you get past the initial fear, the process of giving blood is more than worth it as you know it’s going to someone in serious need.
“I was always afraid of needles, so nervous,” Rice said. “After I got past that, I was OK and I felt really proud. And, you know, you don’t know where your blood is going to go, but you just know that it’s probably going to help save lives.”
The former All-Pro wide receiver is also petitioning for others to join him.
“Here’s your chance to make a difference,” he added. “You never know who you might be helping. It could be a friend or a family member who needs blood – and that’s why it’s so important.”
