The correctional officer who is said to have shot and killed another correctional officer outside a Mississippi prison on Tuesday has been identified.
Caboris McAfee is being held at the Lauderdale County Jail following an altercation in a parking lot of the East Mississippi Correctional Facility that resulted in the death of Justin Whipps. Both men were working at the time of the incident.
While details as to what sparked the altercation have not been released, a press release noted that McAfee was restrained by fellow officers after they heard a gunshot. Law enforcement arrived soon thereafter and arrested McAfee. Whipps died at the scene.
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family,” the release said. “[Management and Training Corporation] is committed to supporting them through this very difficult time.”
Since it was an officer-involved shooting, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.
