Jackson State defeated Southern 43-24 to take home back-to-back SWAC championships and to continue its historic undefeated season.
The Tigers started off blazing hot on all fronts. In the first quarter alone, JSU tacked on three touchdowns, forced three turnovers, and kicked a field goal to take a 26-0 lead.
Southern would steal a little momentum away from the Tigers with a 24-10 run to cut the deficit and sneak their way back into the ballgame in the second half. However, a late third-quarter Shedeur Sanders touchdown pass to Rico Powers would be the dagger to dismantle the Jaguars’ attempt at a comeback.
JSU’s victory came at the helm of success from its difference makers. Sanders led the way offensively completing 31 of 44 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns, with two of the scores being thrown to senior wide receiver Shane Hooks.
Defensively, three Tigers — Kevin Coleman Jr., Daelyn Dunn, and Reggie Swinton — hauled in an interception and two — Justin Ragin and Antonio Doyle Jr. — recovered fumbles to give their team a victory in both the turnover battle and on the scoreboard.
