Two Jackson State baseball players have earned All-SWAC honors following stellar campaigns during the 2023 regular season.
Third baseman Ty Hill and relief pitcher Erick Gonzalez were both voted to the second team by coaches and sports information directors across the league.
Hill, a semifinalist for this year’s Ferriss Trophy given annually to the state’s top player, hit above .380 for the third year in a row. The Saltillo native also had six home runs and 53 RBI with a league-leading 49 walks.
“[Ty Hill] is an excellent, excellent baseball player,” JSU Assistant AD for Broadcasting and Video Services Rob Jay said at Monday’s Ferriss Trophy presentation. “He started the season batting over .400. It dipped a little bit under .400, and it would have been over, but they won’t pitch to him. The teams in the SWAC won’t pitch to him.”
As for Gonzalez, the sophomore right-hander made 25 appearances for Jackson State, finishing the year with a 4.24 ERA and 60 strikeouts. The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native also had seven saves for the Tigers.
Jackson State (28-23 overall, 13-17 SWAC) will take on Grambling (27-24, 22-7) in round one of the conference tournament on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
