MOBILE, Ala. — Today could be Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd’s last day on the job. This afternoon Byrd is expected to plead guilty to a felony charge in U.S. District Court in Mobile which will force him to leave office.
The sheriff has signed a plea deal admitting to having one of his deputy’s erase a dashboard camera after the arrest of James Stahl. Stahl stole a patrol car and Byrd is accused of kicking Stahl the groin after he was subdued with a Taser. The maximum penalty for Byrd could be 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Byrd is also facing a 31 count indictment in Mississippi which includes charges of extortion, fraud, and hiding prosecution.
