An investigation is underway after a contract worker fell through the roof of a Laurel door manufacturing plant and died over the weekend.
Police confirm that 46-year-old Cruz Lopez Calderon, a crewmember of a Texas company hired to work on the roof of the Masonite plant, fell to his death after the surface beneath his feet gave way on Saturday around 9 a.m. causing him to drop roughly 60 feet onto a concrete floor.
At this time, no foul play is suspected in Calderon’s death. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the fatal incident. Laurel police have confirmed to WDAM that the U.S. Department of Labor will likely join the investigation.
Masonite has since issued the following statement following the contractor’s death.
“We are extremely saddened that an employee of a roofing company performing work at our laurel facility suffered fatal injuries Saturday. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with their family, co-workers, and friends during this difficult time. We are supporting our employees by making counseling resources available to them.”
