An investigation is underway after an inmate at a Mississippi prison was transported to a local hospital before passing away.
Last Tuesday, the unidentified inmate at East Mississippi Correctional Facility was taken to the hospital due to an “unknown medical issue.” On Saturday, officials confirmed the male inmate had died after measures were unsuccessfully taken to save his life.
Emily Lawhead, director of communications for Management and Training Corporation which operates the correctional facility in Meridian, issued the following statement:
“An inmate at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility died on Saturday, October 5, at a local hospital after he suffered from an unknown medical issue. The inmate was transported to the local hospital on Tuesday, October 1, after notifying facility staff he was having difficulty breathing. Hospital staff took measures to try to save the inmate’s life but were unsuccessful. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.”
This incident comes after three other inmates locked up in the Meridian facility passed away in July.
