An investigation is underway after a dead body was discovered in the Pearl River.
The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office received a call on Saturday from fishermen reporting a floating body in the water approximately five miles north of Atwood Water Park in Monticello. First responders from multiple agencies collaborated to recover the remains.
Lawrence County Sheriff Ryan Everett confirms that the unidentified individual was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Jackson for an autopsy and attempt at identification.
Though a description of the remains has not been provided, the sheriff is asking those who have not seen or heard from the missing person over the past few weeks to come forward with information.
“I know everyone wants more information, however, we are early in the stages of the investigation and have no further details. I will try to keep everyone updated when possible,” Everett said. “Thank you to each and every agency that assisted with this recovery.”
This is a developing story.
