An inmate who escaped a Mississippi jail has been sentenced to more than three decades in prison.
Terry Brooks, 44, was handed a 32-year sentence by a Lowndes County judge on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to escape and auto burglary dating back to a jailbreak on Halloween of 2023 that resulted in Brooks being on the run for three days.
Brooks escaped from the Lowndes County Jail alongside another inmate after the two cut out a portion of a window and crawled through the prison’s ventilation system. While his partner in the crime was captured by officers moments after they made it through two fences, Brooks fled on foot before attempting to steal a car from Columbus Motors.
Brooks was captured by deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office with help from the U.S. Marshal’s Service on Nov. 3.
His sentencing on Wednesday included 12 years for the escape and auto burglary charges and 20 years for an unrelated cocaine possession charge. In 2022, he was arrested in St. Louis, Mo., after jumping out of a two-story building while carrying cocaine and a gun.
Brooks was originally serving time for charges connected to the murder of a 20-year-old in Columbus in 2020.
