ATLANTA, Ga. – More than 11,000 Mississippians could be giving their money away because they did not file 2011 tax returns and are due over $9 million.
“But the key thing to remember is you can still collect the money. However, you must file a return no later than Wednesday, April 15, by midnight,” explained IRS spokesperson Mark Green.
The IRS estimates that the average unclaimed refund for 2011 is $629. “So we encourage individuals who had a part time job or had any type of without holdings -whether it’s from a pension plan or retirement plan or whether it’s just merely from estimated taxes you paid- or were self-employed, definitely file at 2011 tax return,” Green advised.
Those who need the 2011 paperwork can download from IRS.gov, or order over the phone at 800-829-3676. Green said the forms are free. “If you misplaced your W2s from that period, you can contact your company or your formal employer, they should have copies for you. OR you can order a transcript on our website.”
Federal law givesmost taxpayers a three-year window of opportunity to claim a refund. If not done in that timeframe, the money goes to the U.S. Treasury.
