HATTIESBURG, Miss.- U.S. Immigration and Homeland Security investigators arrested 29 people in 13 cities and eight states on Thursday for sex trafficking.
WDAM reports that Hattiesburg was one of the 13 cities involved in “Operation Safe Haven,” a project that targeted illegal brothels trafficking Hispanic women.
The project began with the release of a five-count indictment filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia where a victim came forward and said she was trafficked. Following her statement six suspects were charged with conspiracy to participate in the sex trafficking of a minor and 38 were charged with the conspiracy to transport a person in interstate commerce for prostitution.
Authorities are still looking for 9 suspects after the 29 were arrested Thursday.
