A husband and wife who serve as Mississippi legislators have withdrawn their names for reelection, leaving their children as the only candidates remaining on the ballot.
After qualifying to run for reelection early in the process, Representative Ed Blackmon, D-Canton, and Senator Barbara Blackmon, D-Canton, later had their positions in the state legislature challenged by their children, Lawrence and Bradford, respectively.
The process raised suspicions that the two lawmakers had qualified early in order to dissuade other potential suitors for the government positions so that they could essentially hand the seats to their children.
Now that Representative Blackmon and Senator Blackmon have officially taken their hats out of the ring, Lawrence and Bradford Blackmon are anticipated to be shoe-ins as newly elected members of the Mississippi legislature barring any unforeseen circumstances.
