Mississippi has seen its fair share of severe weather and natural disasters in 2019, and the Mississippi National Guard (MSNG) and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) continue to prepare for every possible situation.
This week, both organizations are participating in national-level earthquake exercises. The MSNG is hosting Ardent Sentry/Shaken Fury 2019 at the Camp McCain Training Center.
The exercises will continue through June 7th and center around a catastrophic earthquake scenario along the southwest segment of the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) near Memphis, Tennessee. The exercise will incorporate response and recovery missions. Approximately 250 MSNG Soldiers and Airmen are participating in the exercise which tests the force’s response to an earthquake that impacts 21 Mississippi counties.
On the Emergency Management side, MEMA will participate in Shaken Fury 2019. This portion of the exercise involves a series of tabletop, functional and full-scale exercises in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Northern Command, state and local governments, and the private sector.
The purpose of Shaken Fury 2019 is to evaluate and improve the whole community’s response to a “no-notice” earthquake, identify gaps in resources, and implement a coordinated recovery strategy that prioritizes resources required for the response.
