Hurricane Harvey: Watches and warnings begin in Mississippi

Mississippi continues to be affected by Hurricane Harvey into Thursday. Meteorologists watching potential flood waters as well as tornadoes.

THURSDAY:

Update 6:05 p.m.

The National Weather Service has extended the Flash Flood Warning for DeSoto, Marshall, and Benton Counties until 12:30 a.m. Friday.

Update 6:00 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Lafayette, DeSoto, Coahoma, Marshall, Tunica, Tate, Quitman, and Panola County until 11:45 p.m.

Update 5:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Marshall, Tippah, and Benton Counties until 11:30 p.m.

Update 5:00 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued tornado warnings for 15 counties in Mississippi until 8:00 p.m.

The counties are Alcorn, Benton, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Marshall, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tippah, Tishomingo, Union, and Yalobusha.

Update 4:15 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Lowndes county until 4:30 p.m.

Update 3:40 p.m.: 

There is a flash flood warning for Panola; Quitman; Tate; Tunica until 7:00 p.m. and another for Benton; DeSoto; Marshall until 6:30 p.m.

Update 3:00 p.m.: 

The tornado warnings have begun to subside for the afternoon and now the flash flood warnings are picking up. Warnings for the following locations are in effect:

Panola; Quitman; Tate; Tunica – until 4:00 p.m.

DeSoto- until 4:30 p.m.

Benton; Marshall; Tippah – until 5:30 p.m.

Lafayette; Marshall – until 5;45 p.m.

DeSoto; Lafayette; Marshall; Panola; Tate – Until 6:15

Tornado watches scheduled till 8:00 p.m. for the following:

Alcorn; Benton; Calhoun; Chickasaw; Itawamba; Lafayette; Lee; Marshall; Monroe; Pontotoc; Prentiss; Tippah; Tishomingo; Union; Yalobusha

Update 2:00 p.m.: 

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Tippah and Alcorn Counties until 2:45 p.m. this afternoon.

Chickasaw, Tishomingo, and Pontotoc are also under a tornado warning until 3:00 p.m.

There is also a flood warning for Benton, Marshall, Tippah, and Lafayette until 5:30 p.m.

Update 1:45 p.m.: 

The 2:15 p.m. tornado warning for Prentiss has also been extended to Lee, Tippah and Union Counties.

If you are in these areas please seek shelter now.

Update 1:10 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Itawamba, Lee, Pontotoc, Union, Benton, and Tippah Counties until 1:45 p.m.

Another tornado warning has been issued for Prentiss until 2:15. If you are in the area please seek shelter.

Desoto is under a flash flood warning until 4:30 this afternoon.

Update 1:05 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Panola, Quitman, Tate, and Tunica Counties until 4:00 p.m.

Update 1:00 p.m. 

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Lafayette, Tate, Tunica, Panola, Pontotoc, and Union Counties. until 1:15 p.m., as well as, a tornado warning for Desoto county until 1:30 p.m. Benton and Tippah Counties are also under a Tornado watch until 1:45 p.m.

Update 12:35 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Benton, Tippah, and Union Counties until 1:00 p.m. and for Panola, Tate, and Tunica Counties until 1:15 p.m.

Update 12:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Benton, Lafayette, and Pontotoc, Counties until 12:45 p.m.

Update 12:20 p.m. 

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Benton, Tippah, and Union Counties until 12:30 p.m. A tornado warning was also issued for Calhoun, Chickasaw, Lafayette, and Pontotoc Counties until 12:45 p.m.

Update 12:12 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Panola County until 12:15 p.m.

Update 12:08 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Calhoun and Chickasaw Counties until 12:15 p.m. They have also extended the tornado warning for Benton, Marshall, and Tippah counties until 12:45 p.m.

Update 12:05 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Benton, Pontotoc, Tippah, and Union Counties until 12:30 p.m. A tornado warning was also issued for Tate County that will expire at 12:45 p.m.

 

Update 11:45 a.m.: 

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Benton, Lee, Pontotoc, Tippah, and Union counties until 12:00 p.m. A tornado warning issued for Panola, Tunica, Tate, and Quitman Counties as well until 12:15 p.m.

Update 11:00 a.m.: 

Tornado warnings are in effect for Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Winston, Chickasaw, Lee, Pontotoc until 11:30 this morning. Another was issued for Kemper and Lauderdale until 11:45 a.m.

Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.

Update 10:40 a.m.: 

A tornado warning was issued for Noxubee County until 11:00 a.m. and the warning for Winston county was extended until 11:00.

Panola and Yalobusha Counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning with winds moving northwest at 30 mph. There is potential for this storm to create tornadoes.

Update 10:15 a.m.: 

A tornado warning has been issued for Kemper, Neshoba, and Winston Counties until 10:30 a.m.

Flood warnings are also in effect for Tate, Tunica, Quitman, and Tallahatchie into the later afternoon hours.

WEDNESDAY

Update 5:30 p.m.:

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for Many Louisiana and Mississippi counties until 7:00 p.m. Thursday.

NWS said that 15-25 MPH winds will increase tide levels one to two feet above normal and some places may even see tide levels as high as three feet above normal.

The NWS warns that there could be minor flooding of low lying roadways along coastal areas outside of Hurricane Protection levees, as well as, near tidal lakes.

The affected counties in Mississippi include Jackson, Harrison, and Hancock.

Update 2:50 p.m.: 

A tornado warning has been issued for Hinds and Warren Counties until 3:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
was located over Utica, or 17 miles northwest of Crystal Springs,
moving north at 20 mph.

Update 1:20 p.m.: 

A tornado warning was issued for Greene County until 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Severe thunderstorm warnings continue for the Forrest, Claiborne, Copiah, Jefferson, and Lincoln County areas.

Update 12:50 p.m.:

The NWS has issued a tornado warning for Jones County until 1:15 p.m.

This dangerous storm will be near Laurel, Ellisville and Tuckers Crossing around 1255 PM CDT. Sandersville around 115 PM CDT.
Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include Soso.

Severe thunderstorms are also plaguing the Greene and George County line north of Lucedale, to Wilmer, to the Jackson and Mobile County line west of Dees. Expect trees down and potential roof and structural damage.

Update 11:55 p.m.: 

A tornado warning was issued for Perry County until 12:30 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Brooklyn, or 16 miles southeast of Hattiesburg, moving north at 25 mph.

Another tornado warning was issued for Covington, Jefferson Davis, and Marion Counties until 1:00 p.m.

Update 11:35 a.m.: 

A tornado warning has been issued for Jackson, George and Greene Counties until 12:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service suggests you take cover now. Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

Update 11:00 a.m.: 

A flood watch is in effect for several counties in Louisiana and Mississippi until 7:00 p.m. Aug. 31.

Officials say they expect to see 1-3 more inches of rain through Thursday for Amite, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River, Pike Walthall, and Wilkinson.

Update 10:50 a.m.: 

A tornado warning has been issued for Covington, Forrest, Lamar and Jones Counties until 11:45 a.m.

Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without
shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed.
Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree
damage is likely.

The National Weather Service has also issued a tornado watch until 6:00 p.m. for the following areas:

Harrison, Amite, Hancock, Jackson, Pearl River, Pike, Walthall, Wilkinson, George, Greene, Perry, Stone, Wayne.

Cities include:

Centerville, Clinton, Covington, Crossroads, Darlington, Dexter, Diamondhead, Dolorosa, Easleyville, Enon, Felps, Fort Adams, Franklinton, Gautier, Gillsberg, Dloster, Greensburg, Gulfport, Hammond, Jackson, Lacombe, Liberty, Mandeville, Mccomb, McNeil, Montpelier, Moss Point, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, Picayune, Ponchatoula, Robert, Salem, Slidell, Smithdale, St. Martin, Tylertown, Waveland, and Woodville.

(Locations may include Louisiana areas)

Update 10:15 a.m.: 

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for East Central Pearl River County in Southern Mississippi until 10:30 a.m. and for Northwestern Forrest County in southeastern Mississippi, Central Lamar County in southeastern Mississippi until 10:45 a.m.

Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes were located 13 miles west of McHenry, or 14 miles southeast of Poplarville, moving northeast at 30 mph and near Purvis, or 12 miles southwest of West Hattiesburg, moving north at 35 mph.
