Hugh Freeze is back in college football as the new head coach at Liberty.
Reports indicate that the former Ole Miss coach has agreed to a deal to become the head coach of the Flames after Turner Gill retired after the 2018 season, the team’s first year in the FBS.
Freeze resigned from Ole Miss in July 2017 in the wake of what the university called “a pattern of personal misconduct” and in the midst of the ongoing NCAA investigation. At the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined that Freeze failed to monitor the staff at Ole Miss and that the program lacked institutional control.
While the program received a 2-year bowl ban, a loss of scholarships and several other penalties, Freeze, other than his reputation, walked away relatively unscathed.
Freeze spoke at Liberty in the months following his resignation and openly discussed the fallout from the scandal.
“I had to say to people that I loved, ‘I am sorry. Please forgive me,'” Freeze said during a chapel service. “And today is really the first day I can tell the faith family, ‘I am sorry. Please forgive me.’”
Prior to getting the job at Liberty, Freeze had recently taken an offensive coordinator gig with the Arizona Hotshots in the AAF, a developmental football league, and interviewed for the OC job at Tennessee.
