WASHINGTON, D.C.–A vote on the next U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives was expected to come Thursday. Mississippi Republicans who have spoken on the matter favore Rep. Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California.
The vote was thought to be sured up for McCarthy. But, the Washington Post reported Wednesday that a hard-line conservative group called the House Freedom Caucus had enough votes to deny McCarthy the post.
Cong. Gregg Harper, a guest on The Gallo Radio Show last week, said he believes in McCarthy’s conservatism and his outlook.
“He’s really got kind of a Reagan style. It’s a positive view of the country and what we can do and kind of a dream big philosophy,” said Harper.
Harper said McCarthy has some strong Mississippi connections, including one of his staffers, Natalie Buchanan, being from Madison.
“He came in with me to the University of Mississippi Medical Center to promote some telehealth and telemedicine issues that we’ve got a couple of major bills on.”
Harper said that no matter who is elected, they would still face problems of a divided government.
