STARKVILLE, Miss.–Both the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles had exciting homecoming weekends, with both schools winning the games. For Ole Miss, it was a critical defeat in Memphis.
In Starkville, the Bulldogs had a decisive win-the Mississippi State Bulldogs, that is, defeating the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 45 to 20. State is looking at 6:30 kick-off next Saturday against Kentucky.
Hall of Famer Ray Guy was one of thousands invading Hattiesburg Saturday for Homecoming at USM, where the Golden Eagles picked up a win over UTSA, 32 to 10. That brings their record to 4-3 on the season, the best they’ve earned in a long while.
A tough loss to the Memphis Tigers brought Ole Miss to a 5-2 record Saturday. Memphis is still undefeated. The final was 37 to 24. Next week the Rebs take on the Aggies of Texas A&M in a 6 p.m. kick-off.
For Alcorn it was a hard fought SWAC match-up against Grambling, but a defeat nonetheless. It was 35 to 34 and it’s another open week for Alcorn next Saturday.
It was a rough and tough loss for Delta State this weekend in Cleveland as the Statesmen hosted the Univ. of West Georgia, who came to town locked and loaded. The final was 28 to 7, leaving the Fighting Okra reeling with a 5-2 record. Next week they regroup for West Alabama in Cleveland.
The Jackson State Tigers returned from Huntsville with a 28 to 22 loss to Alabama A&M Saturday.
It was a decisive SWAC loss to Texas Southern for Mississippi Valley State Saturday, 49 to 21.
