Two Saturdays ago, College Hill Presbyterian Church in Oxford was destroyed by a fire but that hasn’t stopped the congregation from worshipping.
The fire took place just before 11 p.m. on August 13 and within 12 hours, a service of both mourning and worship was held in a portion of the church that went unharmed.
Even though the historic church — which is known as the oldest church in the Oxford area and the marriage place of Estelle and William Faulkner — lost its pulpit, pews, and pew gates in the fire, plans are being made to rebuild.
“It can’t be identical. It’s impossible to be identical,” Elder Doug Paul told WMC. “However, there’s a commitment to make sure that this church is recognizable.”
Paul added that he hopes some of the bricks that remain from the original structure can be used when construction begins. Anyone who would like to help out with College Hill’s fundraising efforts can either click here or mail a check to 339 Co Rd 102, Oxford, MS 38655.
