JACKSON, Miss.–You may be a Mississippian who’s not prone to going to parades. You may be one who’s actually more likely to head to the woods with a gun and turkey call. If that’s you, then Saturday is your day. It’s the start of spring turkey season in Mississippi.
It may be a better one than last year, too. David Godwin, the turkey program coordinator with the Miss. Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, said the reason is that 2012 was a good season for turkey hatching and that two-year-olds are the ones most prime for harvesting.
“Pretty much every region of the state should see better turkey numbers,:” he said.
Godwin said the cold spring may get things off to a slow start in some places, though.
“We’re still not seeing a lot of budding in the northern half of the state as far as our foliage goes. So probably off to a little bit of a slow start. We expect south Mississippi to start a little bit better than north Mississippi, with respect to gobbling activity early in the year. But all regions of the state should have a good year.”
The spring season does not include Sunflower, Coahoma or Quitman counties, so you can’t hunt there.
Godwin said the bag limit is one adult gobbler or one gobbler with at least a 6-inch beard per day. You can’t get more than three gobblers during the spring season.
