The city of Hattiesburg is on a mission to become the “City of 100 Murals.” On Monday, the Hub City unveiled mural No. 62, honoring comedian and musician Fred Armisen, along with other Hattiesburg-connected artists.
The Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art (HAPA) revealed “JAM Session: Series 2” at the Rebekah Stark Johnson Community Arts Center. Jackson-based artist Reshonda Perryman painted the wall art, with the second phase paying tribute to Armisen, Afroman, Webb Wilder, and Van Dyke Parks.

Armisen, who was also in town as part of his comedy tour, attended the ceremony. The Hattiesburg native has built an illustrious career punctuated by “Saturday Night Live” fame, stardom in several more television shows, and big screen roles. But on the mural, Armisen was recognized for his musical career, which has included time in the “Late Night with Seth Meyers” house band.
“To see myself as a musician highlighted on this well next these other artists is an honor, of course,” Armisen said. “It is a double honor that I was born here. Hattiesburg is a constant reminder in my life. I am proud and honored to be from here.”

The first phase of the “JAM Session” mural was uncovered in May of 2024, with both parts now showcasing Hattiesburg’s role in developing American musical styles like rock and roll, blues, jazz, and hip hop, with a total of 12 artists illustrated. Perryman says painting the murals was a special privilege.
“JAM Session is one of my favorite projects to date, and the second phase is actually a big personal milestone for me,” Perryman said. “It is incredible to be back adding to a piece I love and once again having the opportunity to share my gifts amongst such a wonderful creative landscape.”
On the same day, another mural, titled “Hub of Momentum”, was unveiled on the side of downtown eatery The Porter Pub. The painting exhibits the progress of Hattiesburg from a railroad and lumber town into a vibrant hub of activity, featuring the train depot, pines, and a guitar alongside an arrow representing future progress.
The piece was designed and painted by internationally recognized artist GONZO247 of Houston in his signature graffiti and street art style.
“It has been a great experience and honor to design and paint a mural for Hattiesburg. I have learned about the city’s rich history and enjoyed finding creative ways to incorporate imagery and elements into my artwork,” GONZO247 said. “The mural nods to the past and optimistically looks forward to the future of this dynamic community. I hope it inspires connection and conversation among all who encounter it.”
Since 2020, city initiatives have significantly boosted Hattiesburg’s public art scene, covering murals, sculptures, and utility boxes. Numerous publications have listed Hattiesburg as an emerging public arts destination, with several more public art projects in the pipeline for 2025.
“These murals capture timeless parts of the Hattiesburg story while amplifying our current progress and inspiring future artists who come from our great city,” Mayor Toby Barker said. “They each infuse color and personality into a downtown area that’s often hidden in plain sight. We are grateful to all who brought these ideas to life.”
