The Hattiesburg Police Department is asking for the public’s help as they search for a suspect who shot at police officers.
A news release from the Hattiesburg PD has identified Victor Kirksey as the suspect who opened fire as officers stepped out of their vehicle on Saturday night in the area of South 28th Avenue and McInnis Loop. No age was given for Kirksey, but he is a described as a black man, and he was last seen wearing dark pants with a white stripe down the side, a white shirt with sleeves to the elbows and a red backpack.
After firing the initial shots, Kirksey made his way to Greenbriar Apartments, and fled to the back of the complex, according to police. Two other officers approached, and the suspect fired at them.
Officers continued to search the scene but were unable to find him. One officer was taken to the hospital as a result of the shooting.
Kirksey is officially wanted for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and he is considered armed and dangerous. Police warn that you should not approach Kirksey if you see him.
