HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Hattiesburg City Council is expected to consider a resolution Tuesday afternoon that would support its lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender (LBGT) community.
“It’s no giant change in law. But it says you’re welcome here in Hattiesburg,” said Dr. Paul Talbot, who asked the council earlier this month to consider the policy. If approved, Talbot said it could help the city attract and retain talented people. “Basically all (the resolution) does is gives the same rights that you can’t be fired if you’re LBGT or you’re a single mom, or veteran. It’s just a natural next step for equality.” The Hattiesburg City Council meets at 4 p.m.
Starkville adopted a similar resolution last month, becoming the first Mississippi city to do so.
