WASHINGTON, D.C.–You hear a lot of studies giving Mississippi a low ranking. Another DC study group has one for Mother’s Day. WalletHub says Mississippi is the third worst in the country for working moms.
“Work-life balance, professional opportunities and child care, Mississippi ranks low for each one of those categories,” said Jill Gonzales, spokesperson WalletHub. “We did look at 12 different metrics just to get a good look at what’s going on.”

She said those “metrics” are factors in what any mom who wanted to go to work would need.
“That doesn’t necessarily mean that Mississippi fared badly in every metric.”

She said one factor was child care or daycare costs. Mississippi has the second lowest in the country.
“But when you look at the daycare quality, it’s in the bottom ten. And the best school systems ranking unfortunately Mississippi came second to last as well.”
She said that could be prohibitive to women who might want to work, who may be swayed because of the care their children may get.
Gonzales said that women also earn about 80 percent of what men earn on average.
“It’s a little bit tougher and we do like to back that up with numbers.”
She said Mississippi ranked third-highest for female unemployment in the country.
